Chris Christie Critics -Skinny does not equal Healthy

Chris Christie pulled out of the race for Republican candidacy after repeated commentary and criticism about his weight. Headlines asked “Are we ready for a fat President?” Bloggers weighed in on his potential health risks and what that would mean for our country. Dozens of journalists commented on how this would reflect on our nations image, and people on the street expressed fears about having a President with potential health risks presented in such an evident way. It would be difficult to imagine this kind of scrutiny over the waisteline of Winston Churchill, one of the most important political figures of this last century. Christie says he can handle the jokes, he knows he’s overweight, but I’m guessing he’d rather be thinner. He’s most likely tried many diets, and is possibly addicted to processed foods, or particular food groups that are not feeding him well- like a high percentage of Americans are. He could use some help in this arena, and as a particularly intelligent man, I’m guessing that eventually he’ll figure this out. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not familiar with this candidate or his policy- this is not a political view of any kind. The speculation about…

Guest Blogger: Bill Couzens, Founder, Less Cancer

In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I asked my good friend, Bill Couzens, Founder of Less Cancer to write something for us… Several years ago when a dear friend died of breast cancer I wanted to do something that would make a difference. In response, I became co-founder for a fund that would pay for mammograms at a small hospital in Virginia. At the time I thought it a great idea, and year after year the fund continued to serve more and more patients. Each year the numbers were climbing -and I was at first excited about the response -until the realization of what was happening -yes -good work- but the reality of what this all meant- that there was more cancer. Armed with good intentions, it was clear that we were helping people help themselves with early diagnoses, and we were part of a life saving process. That said while we were helpful in helping others win the individual battles for cancer patients, we were getting nowhere with the war on cancer. There was nothing we were doing to eliminate the increasing incidences of cancer. Year after year it was more mammograms and more cancer -not…

Arsenic and Apple Juice

Dr. Oz, Emmy award winning TV host and health guru for daytime viewers everywhere, targeted apple juice on a Sept 12th show, stating that his team had found “unsafe” levels of arsenic in apple juice being sold in America. Oz’s team analyzed juice sources from the U.S. and several other countries, and found “unsafe” levels of arsenic in juice from countries where standards are not as strict as in the US, like China. All products reviewed are commonly sold in the US. Oz also found that up to seven different countries can be represented in one bottle of apple juice, as manufacturers mix them together. The FDA, not available for comment prior to showtime, came out in force following the reaction to the show, claiming Oz to be a “fear monger” and emphatically stating that our American juice is “safe” to consume. Arsenic is a naturally occurring substance, and found in varying levels in soil, and drinking water. Oz claims that the FDA should be looking more closely at this issue, and at our food supply in general, given that countries like China do not have pesticide regulations as rigorous as ours in the US. The use of Arsenic as…
